Nutritional Requirements for Optimal Results

Lucerne, also called Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), is known to be the oldest cultivated crop specifically grown for animal feed. Academic literature traces its origin back to Central Asia, but it is currently grown in most parts of the world under a wide range of climatic conditions to produce various forms of feed for a number of domesticated farm animal species. The well-developed taproot system of lucerne plants provides access to water reserves deeper than 5 metres in some recorded cases, enabling it to survive extended periods of drought.

Management practices for lucerne production need to be in place before establishing the crop itself. This mainly entails (i) the choice of a suitable land area, (ii) nutritional analysis of the soil, (iii) corrective measures based on these results, and (iv) proper seedbed preparation. The weed spectrum must be addressed by either eradicating, or at least limiting, the amount of viable weed seed that may interfere with the growth and development of a newly planted lucerne crop. If applicable, the planned irrigation system must also be correctly laid out to ensure its efficacy.

Recent advances in chemical weed control now allow more frequent planting and establishment timeframes, as opposed to the traditionally limited periods in early spring and late summer. Active ingredients of herbicides such as bromoxynil (nitrile), propaquizafop, imazamox (40 SL), and paraquat can be applied at various growth stages throughout production.

When considering the nutritional requirements of lucerne, various academic strategies have been trialed and tested in order to achieve optimal yields.

Yield is normally measured in tonnes per hectare (t/ha), although many farmers and producers also refer to the number of bales (either square or round) per unit surface area. Average data collected under local South African conditions under irrigated production indicate possible yields of 30–55 tonnes of wet mass per hectare per season, resulting in an estimated 15–25 t/ha of dry material.

Figures for non-irrigated (dryland) production vary greatly depending on rainfall, with an average final dry yield of 4–8 t/ha per season. It should be noted that maximum yield in terms of wet and/or dry mass does not always translate into maximum financial return.

Because many nutrients are removed from the soil during production, it is generally not recommended that a fertilisation program be based solely on nutrient removal values. Fertilisation should rather be planned according to soil analyses, as this provides the most reliable method for preventing nutrient deficiencies.

Potential average yields of 15–25 t/ha of dry matter per season under irrigation are expected to vary between different production systems and climatic regions. Yield will also depend on the dormancy group of the specific variety or cultivar used, as well as the nutritional status of the soil and how effectively this is maintained.

Applications of foliar sprays in the form of specifically formulated products have been shown to enhance overall performance in terms of yield and quality in lucerne fields. Under optimal environmental conditions, a significant proportion of the active ingredients in these products assist biological, physiological, and biochemical processes within the plant.

What is foliar feeding?

Foliar feeding gives plants a direct boost of nutrients through their leaves. This happens via thousands of microscopic pores on leaf surfaces. These openings, called stomata (Greek: stoma, meaning “mouth”), are located primarily on the underside of leaves. Their position helps prevent clogging from dust and other environmental contaminants, and also reduces the risk of fungal spores entering.

The primary function of stomatal openings is to permit gases containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen to enter the plant. These are then used to manufacture sugars during photosynthesis. Conversely, stomata allow water vapour to escape from the plant. In most cases, stomata close at night because carbon dioxide absorption is unnecessary when photosynthesis is not taking place. Stomata may also close on hot, dry days, in heavy winds, or when the soil becomes dry.

In this method of fertilization, nutrient solutions are sprayed directly onto the plant leaves. Foliar feeding can supply the nutrients required for normal crop development in cases where root absorption is suboptimal. Seaweed extract contains an abundance of trace minerals as well as growth hormones that can quickly stimulate plant growth through cell division, enlargement, and elongation. Plant hormones called cytokinins, which increase the speed of cell division, are particularly important. Nothing can replace feeding the soil, but foliar applications can be a valuable addition at certain times of the year or as a strategy to remedy nutrient deficiencies until the soil is able to supply them. Supplementary foliar feeding may also be necessary annually in some soil and climate conditions. For example, in cold soils, foliar fertilizer may be needed each spring to supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and other essential nutrients until the soil warms up and nutrients become available.
Asco Gro, and Millerplex, are seaweed extract fertilizers available in the Hygrotech range.

The best time to spray is late in the afternoon or early in the morning, when temperatures are mild and wind is minimal. When wind is low, finely atomized sprays drift readily — this is ideal. Absorption is further enhanced when weather conditions are humid and moist. The presence of dew on leaves also facilitates foliar feeding. Absorption is maximized when sprays coat the underside of leaves, where the majority of stomata are located. Avoid spraying when temperatures exceed 30°C or onto wilted plants, as this can reduce uptake and damage the plants.

Hygrotech is the sole supplier of Mikskaar peat in Zambia. The peat is imported from Estonia, and Mikskaar is a major supplier of high‑quality peat substrates. Mikskaar peat originates from Sphagnum fuscum plants, which are soft, moss‑like plants that die and are preserved under snow for many years. Over time, layers upon layers are formed from decomposed Sphagnum spp. These layers are then harvested from bogs. Bogs are large areas that are water‑saturated and covered with snow during winter. There are two types of peat harvested, namely light and dark peat.

ColourUp

ColourUp is a proprietary translaminar liquid Calcium Complex which works with the plant’s natural ripening and colouring stages on various fruit and vegetable types. The product is manufactured by Miller® Chemical & Fertilizer, LLC in Hanover, Pennsylvania,17331, United States of America. ColourUp is imported to South Africa by Hygrotech South Africa (Pty) Ltd. The name ColourUp is used only in South Africa and is registered as a Group 2 Fertilizer (Reg. No. B3386 of Act 36 of 1947). Internationally the product is known, marketed, and sold as Calexin® in countries such as the USA, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica and Australia, and CalXpress in New Zealand. ColourUp is applied as a foliar spray and is totally systemic. Being part of the Miller® patented Nutrient Express® technology products, ColourUp focuses mainly on plant energy production and contains no hormonal substances. During periods of rapid growth, fruit development and ripening, plants require energy for proper physiological development and high levels of calcium for fruit quality. Physiological and environmental crop stress slows down plant metabolism and the movement of calcium within plant tissue. Consequently, plants may suffer, crop development may weaken, and fruit may lack necessary nutrients (including calcium) required for optimum harvest quality. International documented benefits from ColourUp applications include calcium mobilization to fruit and supporting natural colour development. Known commercial crop uses of ColourUp in South Africa include table grapes, mangoes, and citrus.

Locations and apple varieties

Trials were conducted in 5 different areas (Koue Bokkeveld, Elgin, Helderstroom, Greyton and Riviersonderend). As many as possible bicolor apple varieties were evaluated. These were Gala, Pink Lady, Sundowner, Rosy Glo and Fuji.

ColourUp rate and application timings

ColourUp was applied 3 times at 10 – 14-day intervals at 2 L/ ha by means of tractor mounted commercial spray equipment. Applications commenced when at least 80% of the apples in the orchard had developed or had started developing colour.

Commercial harvesting practices

The general commercial harvesting practices in the Western Cape may be as follow:

First pick: Quick process during which fruit that are mature (adequate colour development) ahead of the bulk fruit load are harvested and placed in cool storage. This fruit are packed after two weeks in cool storage.

Second pick: This is the main harvesting stage. Harvested apples are kept “fresh” in controlled-atmosphere storage often for months. During these months of storage, the objective is to sort, pack and deliver these apples during optimal marketing (economical) opportunities.

Third pick: This process is similar to the first pick, but in this case, it is late maturing fruit or fruit from a later fruit set.

These practices do however vary among growers and apple varieties. While some varieties go through all three harvesting stages, other varieties are only harvested once (with the aim of having as many fully coloured fruit as possible at that time). These various harvesting procedures had an obvious effect on the assessments of these commercial trials.

Assessments

Randomly tagged apples from randomly chosen trees within ColourUp treated and untreated orchards were frequently monitored for colour development during the trial period. The tagged fruit were sampled as close to commercial harvest as possible. This depended on whether the grower harvested over three picks or only once. Fruit sampled from orchards harvested three times often showed less colour development compared to fruit harvested once only, as the objective of a single harvest is to maximize the presence of fully coloured fruit at picking. In contrast, fruit from trees destined for multiple picks had to be sampled earlier to avoid losing tagged fruit, which affected colour development and final data.

Blind plants in tomato is a disorder concerning the growing point. The tomato plant passes through several stages in the course of a season’s growth, namely: seedling establishment, vegetative growth, flowering, and fruiting stages. During the period of seedling growth, several factors could influence the quality of a seedling, such as:

Seed quality

Seed vigour

Root system development

If anything negatively affects the development of the seedling, it directly influences the crop potential, as the young leaves are essential as the source of energy to the seedling. Since there are few leaves at this stage, anything that damages them may slow growth and reduce yields (Strand et al., 1998).

Blind plants may occur early in development, resulting in a seedling with no true leaves or just one, two, or three leaves. It can also occur later in plant development, after the 5th or 6th node has developed, but at this stage, it is mainly an effect of growing conditions.

According to Incotec et al. (2020), this sensitivity can depend on several factors. Conditions during seed production, as well as during post-harvest processing of the seed, can increase the sensitivity and may eventually, when a “threshold” is passed, lead to an increase in blind plants. Furthermore, germination and growing conditions can affect the occurrence of blind plants.

Tomato plants easily form side shoots, so after a while the plant may recover. When grown at a plant raiser, these plants are often too retarded to be usable, but when sown directly in the field, they may not be noticed.

Priming can have a dramatic effect on the occurrence of blind plants. In sensitive cultivars, increases of over 30% have been observed.

There is certainly a genetic factor that determines whether a cultivar is sensitive to developing blind plants or not (it may be related to the “determinate” character).

A company by the name of Incotec regularly gets the question whether it is possible to “repair” tomato seed lots that already have 10–15% blind plants, probably caused by the genetic background and the conditions during seed production. Incotec continues to maintain research projects in this area to find a repair solution.

Incotec began looking into the blind plants problem in tomatoes in 1995. The goal was to develop a priming method that would not increase the incidence of blind plants but still allow for increased uniformity and speed of germination. Since that time, a safe priming has been developed and is now used for most of the tomato seed lots being grown in many different countries (e.g. the Netherlands, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Israel).

These stresses may delay the onset, rate, and uniformity of germination. Nevertheless, the impact of the environment depends to a large extent on the interaction between the genetic makeup of the plant and the environment, and it is believed that the plant’s response to environmental stresses is controlled by many genes.

Completion of germination is defined as the protrusion of the radicle through the endosperm and seed coat (Bewley et al., 2012). During imbibition, the embryonic axis elongates and breaks through the testa.

Although seed size and/or weight is beneficial for seedling establishment and vigour-related traits, there appears to be no consistent association between seed mass and seed germination performance (Fenner, 2006; Kazmi et al., 2012; Khan et al., 2012).

It was noted during the 2020 season that tomato seedlings in a nursery had an abnormal growth habit, with an absent growing point during the seedling development stage. This forced the plant to form secondary side stems on the main stem, forming a new dominant growing point. Speculations at that time pointed back to the seed company, suggesting a problem with seed quality, and that it only happened with one variety in a specific nursery.

After obtaining all available information from other nurseries that used the same variety and experienced similar problems, it is speculated that climatic growing conditions were not favourable during the seedling germination stage, which affected the dominant growth point. According to Paulo et al., from a well-known seed company, the norm in the US is between 4% and 5% abnormal seedlings, which will later also develop into fruit-yielding plants.

Fertilization in the production of melons is critical and must be done correctly. This can be challenging due to many variables such as soil type, climatic conditions, and irrigation schedules. However, there are basic fertilization guidelines that should be followed to achieve good yields and quality fruit. The specific cultivar also plays a role, as all cultivars have different growth periods that should be considered when planning fertilization schedules.

The elements that play the most important roles during the growing phase of a melon plant are Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and trace elements such as Boron and Molybdenum.

Carbon levels (1%) in the soil also play a significant role, as they determine the release and absorption of Nitrogen. The soil acidity level, i.e., pH, should be within certain norms (5.5–6.5) to ensure good absorption of nutrients.

It is important that Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium are present in the correct ratios. The ratio of Mg to Ca should be 1:3–5, and the combined Ca + Mg to K ratio should be between 10 and 15. Both Ca and Mg are antagonistic to K, and in soils where Ca and Mg are high, this can negatively influence the absorption of K. The absorption of K is also determined by the quantity of P in the soil. If the P level is 30–50 parts in the soil, at least 300 kg/ha of K should be applied.

Many producers confuse Ca deficiencies with Mg and K deficiencies. In many cases, there is too little Mg in the soil and too much Ca. As a result, the plant may show signs of Ca deficiency because it cannot absorb the available Ca. Applying more Ca in this situation only aggravates the problem. Instead, extra Mg should be applied to correct the ratio between these two elements, which would allow for proper reabsorption of Ca. Soils in Namibia are naturally very high in Ca, and in many cases, it is not necessary to apply any Ca at all—only extra Mg and K.

In the previous edition of the Forum, Hygrotech proudly announced the addition of an international supplier of a sweetcorn range to its offering for the South African market. In the interim, trials have been conducted throughout South Africa at selected growers to collect and tabulate data. This process has been ongoing for 24 months.

After initially receiving 12 successful commercial varieties from May Seeds to trial, the Hygrotech technical team has selected the top five varieties that performed well across the country.

The selection process was done at grower level and included discussions with all role players in the supply chain, from those prepacking to representatives from supermarkets. One of the many criteria used to evaluate the varieties, was to determine the days to maturity in comparison to competing varieties.

We were pleasantly surprised by how quick the selected varieties were to maturity. In the challenging circumstances of load shedding, disease pressure and paired spraying costs, and irrigation costs, this is a definite benefit for growers. Another standout of the May sweetcorn range was the high incidence of single stalks in comparison to some varieties that tend to have side shoots, often referred to as ‘’tillers’’ or ‘’suckers’’.

With the May varieties all nutrients are used to mature the cobs set and this is not the case where side shoots are present. A further negative of side shoots is the increased foliage that is present, that is conducive to more diseases. This poses challenges to spraying for insects and diseases. After irrigation or rainfall, the crop tends to take longer to dry out, which benefits any fungal diseases.

Herewith results from a summer planting in the Highfield area: The average days to maturity were +/- 75 days for all varieties in the trial.

The demand in the market is for ears/cobs not wider than 50mm in diameter and at least 16cm in length. The range in the trial all met these requirements.

Winter trials were conducted in the same region and the following results were achieved. It is evident from these trials that winter conditions did not suit these varieties. Currently Hygrotech recommends spring, summer, and early autumn plantings. In this trial the average days to maturity shifted out to 105 days. Two different climate conditions were observed over the 105 days, with the first 50 days being warm at 27°C during the day with night temperatures of 11°C. From there the day temperatures dropped to 22°C with night temperatures going down even lower to 5°C.

Although Hygrotech conducted winter trails, Hygrotech firmly believes the range is better suited for Spring, Summer and Autumn productions, and the recommendation will be not to plant in winter.

The plants were shorter in the Autumn plantings and the ear sizes remain the same. Diameter average 50mm and some lengths were shorter or longer by a couple of centimetres. Because of “stress” some plants could produce more stalks. No silk jamming spotted which is another problem during this period. Due to the quick growth and early maturity of all the cultivars, leaf diseases did not play a major role in production. Ears already formed before the plants started to struggle.

Caramelo F1, Khan F1 and Sherbet F1 all selected for the fresh market, with Mirza F1 selected to fill the processing gap. Khan F1 is also the only cultivar in the range for a dual-purpose variety. Limpopo Autumn plantings (2023) showed extremely good results, and some of the growers are already considering changing some of the sowings to Khan and Carmelo. Mirza showed the processing potential (longer ear), and this attractive ear could become one of the fresh market options soon.

Pop Vriend is one of the leading green bean breeders in the world, demands only perfection and quality in a product range and this range is currently available from Hygrotech, the sole distributor in Southern Africa.

“Leading varieties to withstand, stressful conditions”

Almost two decades ago, we started breeding specifically for challenging climate conditions and heat stress. Our first Magma Collection varieties, Sanford, Lunar, Pelican, and PV857, were introduced for the fresh market in the United States as they showed consistently high marketable yields under heat stress and other challenging conditions. We’re currently extending this collection of stress-resistant beans to other markets where the climate is becoming more extreme, like Italy.

“The perfect variety for each growing slot”

The Magma Collection offers a complete range of varieties with different maturity dates, allowing you to split your planting. The varieties PV857, Lunar, and Jaquar give you consistent, uniform, dark green pods that yield reliably in highly variable climates.” The following 4 cultivars were selected for the Southern Africa market, supporting the already well-known Douglas:

With a Brix level of 11–12, dry matter content of 13%, and Betanin content of 0.65g/100g, Scarlett F1 delivers better flavour, sweeter taste, and deeper colour. These characteristics result in repeat buying by consumers and longer storage life—helping you reduce waste and maximise your profit window.
