The basis of Hygromix consists of Peat Moss imported from a professional Peat company, Mikskaar, in Estonia. In its manufacturing plant, Hygrotech aerates the Peat, adds nutrients in the ratio required by vegetable seedlings, adds vermiculite and polystyrene. All these combines to ensure consistency over time, storability and a medium that delivers a seeding with a strong root system combined with a strong stem and leaves, ideal for transplanting. This medium has good water holding capacity and if irrigation schedules are monitored, water logging of the root zone can be avoided. The manufacturing process further ensures a medium that is 99% pathogen free.

An innovation to the Hygromix was the introduction of an aggressive strain of Trichoderma into the medium to colonize the root zone, further suppressing any pathogens., called Hygromix T.
